How To Join Our Ohana

We consider each of our puppy homes a part of the Howard Hounds Dachshunds Family.

This page provides all the information needed to start the process of making one of our puppies a part of your family! We offer LIFETIME support to all of our puppies and their families! Welcome and we hope you decide to join our wonderful family of happy puppy owners!


The first step in getting a puppy from us is to fill out our puppy application. This application gives us some of the basic information needed to ensure that your family will be a good fit, and that we have a puppy (or litter on the way) that we feel would fit your family well. Please answer these questions IN DETAIL, if you provide one word answers to these questions we will not reply to your application. Once your application has been approved and we have spoken with you, the next step is to pay the NON-REFUNDABLE $500 Deposit, this goes towards the final puppy price of $1,500.


We breed our litters for our future show and breeding purposes FIRST. So decisions on what puppies are available will likely not be known till those evaluations are made. Puppies will only be available to those who have filled out our application and have been approved. We will pick the puppy that we believe best suits your family and lifestyle, while considering to your preferences for gender and/or coat color. If there is more than one puppy that we believe would suit your family and lifestyle, then we would allow the owner to choose which puppy. Please let us know if you have any questions about joining our family. Our puppies stay here till 10-12 weeks of age, this allows for our evaluation process, appropriate vaccines, etc. We do NOT send our puppies home at 6-8 weeks of age, please do not ask. We do not place puppies as gifts or presents for birthdays/holidays - so no "christmas puppies". We also do not place more than one in a home or in a home with another dog under 1 year of age due to littermate syndrome.


Puppies from us are $1,500 on a spay/neuter contract with Limited AKC Registration (no breeding/showing rights). Co-ownership is required for show prospects.

Payments


A Non-Refundable $500 Deposit is required to guarantee a spot upon a completed and approved application. PLEASE DO NOT PAY A DEPOSIT WITHOUT SPEAKING WITH US. Payments can be made throughout the time your puppy is growing up with us. We do require that your puppy is paid for in FULL by the time he/she reaches 10 weeks of age unless arrangements have been made for final payment at the time of pick up.

Pups will go home between 10-12+ weeks (depending on conformation evaluations). Generally, we reserve a weekend for all the pups to go home. Final balances should be paid in electronic payment, cash, cashier's check, or money order. No personal checks will be accepted for deposits or for the remaining balance due at the time of pick up.

Our Health Guarantee


Howard Hounds Dachshunds does everything within our power to ensure we are producing puppies from the healthiest of parents, we do health testing recommended by our breed parent club (The Dachshund Club of America) All puppies sold by Howard Hounds Dachshunds will be up to date on all age appropriate vaccinations and deworming at the time of sale. The new owner is expected to have the puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within 3 business days after pick up to validate the health guarantee. A copy of the vet visit must be emailed to Howard Hounds Dachshunds to validate. We offer a 24 month health guarantee. The health guarantees the puppies sold will be free of genetic disease for up to 24 months of age. Puppies are registered with Trupanion free trial for 30 days on pick up day. The insurance policy will start as soon as the puppy leaves our property.


The new owner is expected to continue the vaccinations as directed by Howard Hounds Dachshunds using Jean Dodds' Recommended Vaccination Schedule. The dog should never receive the ProHeart6 or ProHeart12 injectable heartworm preventative, or Bravecto Quantum Flea/Tick Injection at any time within its lifetime - these injections VOID the health guaruntee. It is the buyer's responsibility to take the necessary precautions to protect the puppy from dangerous or infectious situations until the puppy has completed its series of proper vaccinations. All future liabilities and veterinarian bills will be the Buyer's responsibility.


Howard Hounds Dachshunds does not guarantee any puppy raised on a Grain-Free or other Diet other than a high-quality kibble approved by us. All Puppies must be kept on the puppy food they are being fed at the time of sale until 1 year of age or one approved by Howard Hounds Dachshunds and kept on a good/consistent exercise plan for life.


Howard Hounds Dachshunds cannot guarantee the size, weight, hair coat, skin conditions, temperament, conformation, or training ability of said dog/puppy. Any information given to you in these regards is simply the breeder’s educated opinion. Many things can influence the growth and development of a dog/puppy.

OHANA Policy


Howard Hounds Dachshunds has an "OHANA" Policy, this policy means that any puppy or dog bred by Howard Hounds is never left behind or forgotten and is always welcomed back with us no questions asked. If at anytime the purchaser finds that he/she can no longer care for this animal or does not feel that this animal is suitable for them any longer, The Purchaser agrees not to sell, place or abandon this animal to a shelter, rescue, or individual, but agrees to return this animal to the seller, Selena Howard, at no cost to the seller.

Picking Up Your Puppy


We DO NOT ship our puppies in cargo - ever! Once your puppy is ready to join your family, you can come pick your puppy up from our home, or we also offer personal delivery of your new puppy. We can meet you within 1 hour of our location free of charge. We do lots of traveling for shows, so we can usually work something out to shorten your drive, or ours if we are delivering. We also encourage you to fly here and pick your puppy up in person and fly back with them under your seat. Please discuss this option in detail with us as there is lots of advanced planning if you are flying in. Some individuals that do puppy/dog transport within the United States that we can discuss as an option. We do have close relations with two transport businesses and I can discuss this if its something you'd like to consider. The closest airport is Louisville SDF.


** There is now a law about shipping puppies - if you find a breeder willing to ship you a puppy without knowing much about you or asking many questions - be aware! These laws are in place due to the volume of puppy mills that will sell and ship you a sick, unhealthy, poorly bred puppy.
